Senior Project: Week 10

Welcome to week 10!

This is our last week so let's get into it...

Project Reflections

In this final journal entry, I would like to discuss the successes of my project, what could have been better, as well as what was effective and what was challenging.

To start off, I am very pleased with my results for my senior project. I had a lot of fun making a web site and learned some new things, all while practicing web development and making a website on my own. Having an official .com domain now is really cool too and it is not that much money to maintain.

For successes, I think utilizing Git/Github and utilizing the project/kanban boards really helped me out, though I could have been better at updating my kanban board more. Having my code up on Github allowed for better organization and allowed me to work on my website from both home and school much more easily. It also allows for a space for my code to live and document changes over time.

I also think that the functions of my website are great and the website is simple but effective. While I had hoped to have more features and things like a database by now, I am still content with the effectiveness and overall look of the site. I want to stick with this theme and ensure that the website is not too complicated, even if I add more things to it in the future.

The most challenging aspects of this project were dealing with broken/conflicting CSS and having to work around issues. This was especially true since I started off with a template and heavily modified it and changed the code. In the end, though, I achieved decent results and was able to make compromises.

Another challenging aspect was the portfolio page. This page, in particular, changed many, many times and will probably continue to change since it never seems to be in the right place in my mind. Even right now I am happy with it, but it could do more. This page gave me a lot of frustration and made me think outside the box many times. It went from Google Drive iframes to links, to local iframes, and finally back to a combination of everything.

Future Endeavors

This project allowed me to be creative, have problem-solving opportunities, and allows me to have something to work on even after education is finished, all while expressing myself in the end. I have a lot more ideas for my website and plan to continue to improve it. One of the biggest goals for the website is to have a database or at least some way to update and add items to the site without having to re-upload parts of it and the code. I also look forward to showing off the website to friends, family, and colleagues to get feedback and ideas on how to improve things.

Thank you all for joining me on my journey through my senior project of building my own portfolio website.

Thanks!
